LaMar Linton, a recent graduate of the Business Management program, at the Chesapeake campus has succeeded in starting a business. His retail sales store, Pick a Thread Clothing and Accessories, offers name brand clothes and accessories at prices lower than a department store.

Through hard work and perseverance, he has capitalized on his education to make his dream come true. Asked how he was able to do it, LaMar quoted self-help guru Tony Robbins, “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” LaMar has developed his supply chain, established a store front and generated a solid business plan to grow his company. As a price leader, he knows he must keep his costs low and build his customer base through word of mouth. His Grand Opening on May 10th was a huge hit.

When asked how his experience at Centura helped him to achieve his goal he said, “I shopped around and looked at ODU, TCC and the other colleges in the area and felt like a number. When I checked out Centura, everyone was warm and welcoming and it was like a family. They take care of you from day one, until your capstone. The faculty and staff are dedicated to making your career goals a reality.”

At Centura, LaMar serves on the Student Council, National Technical Honor Society and is the president of Phi Beta Lambda, the collegiate chapter of Future Business Leaders of America. Having completed his Associate’s degree in Business Management (summa cum laude), LaMar is returning to Centura Chesapeake to complete his Associate’s in the Web Development concentration. With the skills to develop his own web site and his “can do spirit”, he’ll no doubt become a successful business person. Congratulations, LaMar Linton!
